Fake Checks, Internet Identity Theft & Charity Fraud; Tips on How to Avoid Being Defrauded!

Losing money is never an enjoyable experience, whether your home is suddenly no longer worth what you paid for it, you misplaced your wallet or made a bad investment. Losing money causes stress, depression and extreme disappointment. The worst possible way to lose money is by being swindled out of it dishonestly, like purchasing an item that is never delivered, investing in a company that doesn’t exist, or inputting your credit card information into a website that is not real. These are all forms of fraud, all crimes and all leave you feeling like a fool for ever thinking they were legitimate. Fraud costs people around the world billions of dollars every year.

Fake Checks

There are many ways you can be tricked into turning your dollars over to dishonest people, so be vigilant and smart when performing any type of financial transaction. One of the most common ways people fall victim to fraud is through phony checks. This happens when someone pays you with a check that has little or no money in the account for the check to clear, or even worse, when the account doesn’t even exist. Before you take a check as final payment, be sure the check includes a name AND physical address that matches the buyers drivers license. If the check bounces, at least you have a name to go and a location to check out.

Internet Fraud & Identity Theft

Another form of fraud to be on the lookout for is internet fraud. Purchasing items over the internet makes life much easier and more convenient. However, there are some people who are willing to take advantage of this fact and produce false websites where you enter your credit card information into and never receive the product that you ordered; most often because it simply never existed in the first place. Not only do you not receive the item you thought you ordered, but now some stranger has your credit card information and mailing address. It is most important to do research on a website you plan to order from. Read all customer reviews that are available and make sure the ratings are positive. This will help eliminate the possibility of dealing with a false website.

Charity Fraud

Donating to charities is a great way to help others out and stand behind a cause that you believe in. One of the most disgraceful forms of fraud is charity fraud. Charitable people are groups that con artists are eager to take advantage of. The holidays are fast approaching, and that is the most popular time of year that these false charities arise. If you want to give to a charity, NEVER respond to a solicitation. Choose the charity yourself, and donate directly to that specific charity. Be wary of third parties who claim to donate one hundred percent of their proceeds to a charity.
