Avoiding Fraudulent Charity Scams This Holiday Season in Greater Miami Florida

It is a natural response in most people to be extra charitable during the holiday season. Even the generosity spread all year long will be amplified. It is sometimes hard to decipher what the real charity collections are and which are just scams. We work hard for the income we have, and don’t like to be taken advantage of by the scammers out to make an easy buck, when we chose to give it to those in need.

Advanced Private Investigator & Security of Miami FL would like to give you a few red flags that could reflect a scam instead of a real charity.

1. Do your homework. A detested word from your youth has crept into your life again. But in this case, it is more important to ensure your money is going to those who need it. There are a few organizations who have done most of the work for you. Charity Watch and Charity Navigator (both recommended by the Federal Trade Commission) have compiled lists of true victims of specific disasters and include a breakdown on how your donation is used.

2. Avoid the direct solicitor. Seeing the plea for help on social media, or receiving an email is an impulse you should keep under control. If they do not have a sponsored website, chances are they are scammers playing on your sympathies. Always do your homework before you distribute your handouts.

3. Don’t give out personal information. Charities do not need your Social Security number or bank account routing information to accept a tax-deductible donation, but scam artists will often make you believe you do. An authentic charity organization will be able to tell you on what they will spend your money, whether your gift is tax-deductible (it should always be) and if there are any exceptions to the kinds of people who can take receipt of your generosity. It’s your money, you always have a choice on how it is spent.

4. Keep records. Keeping records for funds given are important, especially if you plan on using it as a right off on your taxes. Amounts over $250 are generally issued a letter from the charity you contributed to. If you feel uneasy after giving your donation, pay extra close attention to your bank and credit card statements, and make sure to monitor your credit report.

There always have been, and more than likely always be, people who like to take advantage of the kind hearted, generous sort. Even giving that few bucks to the pan handler could be just another fool too lazy to work, but still expects money to be handed to him. It’s unfortunate to those who are truly down on their luck and could use a few dollars for a warm meal. But even the big time scammers like to have fraudulent charities and take you for every dime you have and never mind the person who just lost their home to a natural disaster, or a third world country who could use vaccines. Always take the time to ensure your donation is going to a real charity instead of lining the wallets of scrupulous characters.
