• Leave the Home – When you first discover an intruder in your home you should try to leave the home immediately. Try to sneak out a window or a back door and go to a neighbor’s or a safe place and then call 911. You do not want to face an intruder or worse, there may be more than one person that has invaded your home.
• If you Can’t not Leave the Home – You find you cannot leave your home, or you have children inside and you do not want to leave them. In such a cases, you will need to barricade yourself in a safe place. With all of your household go into a room with a sturdy door and lock it if possible. • Defend Yourself – If you are able to barricade yourself, you will be much safer. However, still prepare yourself to defend your life. You will want to find a weapon, either a home defense gun, knife, baseball bat or heavy items. If an intruder decides to look for you or your family, and you cannot escape and the police hasn’t arrived, you must now fight. For those with a firearm in the home adrenaline can compromise your aim. This is why you should always aim for center mass. It is the biggest target and you will have a higher chance to hit the intruder. For those with knifes, or a blunt weapon do your best and hit the head, eyes or neck.

Teach Stranger Danger?

When you have children, do not wait for a critical event to help school your child as what to do if there is an intruder or stranger attempting to enter the home. You will want to teach your children the dangers of talking to or letting a stranger into the home. Make sure they know never to open a door for a stranger. If there is an intruder inside the home they should find a safe place to hide or get to their parents. If older kids are left at home make sure to teach them to keep the home locked down and if an intruder makes it inside, they should leave the home immediately. Make sure they know how to call 911 or how to get help.

To undermine intruders getting into your home, you will want to take steps to secure it. Start by having motion sensor lights installed in the yard and around the home. A camera system is another great deterrent as intruders do not like to be seen. Have an alarm system installed on every exterior door and windows. Dogs can also help make a great deterrent.
