1. Founder of Private Investigation Companies. A common mistake most people make, is believing that Pinkerton was the first founder of the modern detective agency. In France of 1833, Eugene Francois Vidocq was the one who founded the first known detective agency. That agency was called Le Bureau des Renseignements. Vidocq was actually a criminal, turned policemen, who in turn hired fellow former criminals wanting to switch sides. Among historians and law enforcement professionals, he was considered the father of modern criminal investigation. The science of ballistics in the aid of police work is credited to Vidocq. He also was the first to encase shoe impressions in plastic molds. With many attributes to make him the best in the field, he was a master of disguise and surveillance. Being well traversed in science, he was an exceptional inventor, holding patents such as indelible ink and unalterable bond paper. Victor Hugo, Edgar Allen Poe, and Charles Dickens are all published and well-known writers who used Vidocq as inspiration for their creativity.
2. The First Known Famous Fictional Private Investigating Detective. When you think of fictional detectives, the popular Sherlock Holmes, who came to life by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, no doubt comes to mind. But in fact, Edgar Allen Poe created the first fictional detective character. C. Auguste Dupin was an private investigator character set in Paris. Dupin leads in three popular and thrilling stories: The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Purloined Letter, and The Mystery of Marie Roget.
3. Where “Private Eye” Originated. As many are aware, Allan Pinkerton founded The Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850. After preventing an assassination attempt on President Abraham Lincoln, his agency become renowned. America’s first secret service was also organized during the Civil War. The logo that was designed for his agency is a large black and white eye above their slogan “We Never Sleep“. The inspiration from that logo created the term “Private Eye“.
4. First Female U.S Private Investigator. Pinkerton’s agency established the first female detective in the U.S., Kate Warne. Posing as a rich, Southern lady, she infiltrated secessionist social gatherings held in Baltimore. She gathered intelligence that contributed to foiling the assassination plot against President Abraham Lincoln. Due to the simplicity of penetrating into social Southern gatherings, she also worked in covert war intelligence gathering. Pinkerton appointed her one of his top five detectives. So inspired, he established the Female Detective Bureau, and put Warne in charge. These are all notable events since women were not permitted to become police officers until 1891 and were not allowed to be detectives until 1903. With Pinkerton at her side, Warne succumbed to pneumonia in 1868. Pinkerton honored her burial in the Pinkerton family plot in Illinois.
